The U.S. national debt is out of control. Just this year, Congressional leaders again introduced Balanced Budget Amendment legislation in order to curb national debt. Support for the BBA is bi-partisan.
Almost all U.S. states require a balanced budget. If balanced budgets work for states, the Balanced Budget Amendment will work at the federal level, too.
Overspending doesn't just hurt future generations in the form of crippling national debt, it hurts hard working Americans today in the form of inflation. Inflation is an invisible tax increase that harms poor and middle income Americans most.
Congress won't stop overspending on their own -- they need to be prohibited from overspending by the American people. This is a bipartisan issue. President Reagan (R) advocated for a Balanced Budget Amendment in 1982. Senator Udall (D-CO) advocated for the BBA in 2011. Congress never acts. Let's do it for them!
